Christmas time last year would have felt very different for actress Billie Lourd, who tragically lost both her mother, Carrie Fisher, and grandmother, Debbie Reynolds, just one day apart from each other at the end of last year.

Now, almost nine months on since bidding farewell to her loved ones, the 25-year-old actress has opened up to Ellen DeGeneres about the “surreal” experience of coping with life after such a big loss.

“Yeah, it's completely surreal,” she tells Ellen, adding: “There's no way to really explain it. It's so hard to talk about.”

“I’ve always kind of lived in their shadows, and now is the first time in my life when I get to own my life and stand on my own,” Billie, 25, said in an interview with Town & Country last month.

“I love being my mother’s daughter, and it’s something I always will be, but now I get to be just Billie.”

She continued: “It’s a lot of pressure, because she had such an incredible legacy, and now I have to uphold that and make it evolve in my own way.”
