Caroline Wilson has taken Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge to task over his “irresponsible comments”, asking on Footy Classified, “What on Earth were you thinking?”

Since leading the Dogs to a fairytale grand final victory in 2016, Beveridge has had a considerably tougher time of things, failing to make the finals in 2017, with his side languishing in 15th place after four rounds of the current season.

As a result, a clearly frustrated Beveridge let off a bit of steam last week.

“There’s no doubt there’s one or two who take some joy in having a potshot or two, and I’m fully aware who they are,” he said on SEN.

Luke Beveridge (born 23 August 1970) is a former Australian rules footballer who played for Melbourne, Footscray and St Kilda in the Australian Football League (AFL) during the 1990s. He is currently the head coach of the Western Bulldogs.

Western Bulldogs coach Luke Beveridge has dismissed claims he has been on a self-imposed media ban since the end of last season and took a swipe at the footy media’s “sense of self-entitlement” in the process.

“It’s water off a duck’s back to me but there’s no doubt that if I had one or two criminals in my family, there’d be a few flat tyres.”

It’s been speculated Beveridge is less than impressed with criticisms from Damian Barrett, who earlier this year reported on “communication issues” at Whitten Oval.

Regardless, Wilson wasn’t having a bar of Beveridge’s response, urging the coach to “stop letting the interrogators bait you about the media and negative commentary”.

Beveridge slams Bulldogs trade 'lie'. Roger Vaughan. Coach Luke Beveridge vehemently denied that Luke Dahlhaus, Tom Liberatore and Clay Smith were any chance to join Jake Stringer in leaving the club, saying the speculation was a lie.

The Western Bulldogs have appointed Luke Beveridge as their new AFL coach, replacing Brendan McCartney.

“I don’t really care who you were talking about, Luke, and neither should you – at least not publicly,” Wilson said on Footy Classified.

“Of course footy coaching is tough on families, every public role is, but do you honestly think journalists take pleasure out of the Bulldogs’ struggles?

“Journalists barrack for the story and your premiership was a cracker. And your fall, the following year, was a great mystery.

“Of course we’re all trying to solve it, something clearly went wrong.”

Wilson said there had “obviously” been conflict, “But to take it out on journalists and to tighten the circle in the way you have is not the answer.”

The veteran journalists finished her piece to camera by telling Beveridge he’s “better than that”:

“For the greater good of footy, I really hope it works, but negative comments – and ridiculous comments and irresponsible comments, like the one about tyres?

“Luke, you’re better than that. Get past it.”
