Former world number one Karolina Pliskova is facing a hefty punishment after smashing her racquet on the umpire’s chair in an irate outburst over an incorrect call in the second round of the WTA Italian Open.

With the game in the balance on Pliskova’s serve at 6-3, 3-6, 5-5 (30/30), an oversight from the umpire and line judge led the Czech to give up a costly break point that helped see Greece’s Maria Sakkari claim victory.

Both adjudicators couldn’t find the mark on an overhead shot that, on replays, appeared to obviously squeeze into the court.

A hot-tempered argument made no progress in her bid to overturn the decision as the sixth seeded Czech went on to lose the game on unfortunate circumstances.
